| 1 | CC23.0000.0016 | artworks (art) | Restoring the Bull Branch, Gouache | Daniel Flinchbaugh | Artist statement: Increasing amounts of water have only one way to go in: a small creek that runs from Catonsville to the Patapsco River, eventually flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. My family’s home sits near this creek, which has wandered through our community for generations. During recent years’ rain events, Bull Branch becomes a destructive force as it drains a business district that is heavily impermeable. Storm water runs off parking lots, overwhelms old stormwater systems, and crashes into the failing watershed downstream on its way to the Bay, flooding businesses, homes, roads, and eventually wreaking havoc on the Patapsco Valley State Park.

I chose to highlight a section of the stream that is designated a 100-year flood plain. Tucked into heavily urbanized southwest Baltimore County, the stream’s riparian buffer is failing, and here we can see the forces at work, from the exposed roots of dead ash trees, to the newly introduced species that choke the forest floor, to the rapidly eroding stream banks. These observations prompted a group of concerned stakeholders to ask what they can do to help. Organized as Restoring the Bull Branch, they are working to convince county, state, and local groups to develop a plan that will resurrect the Bull Branch watershed and create a resilient green infrastructure that works for everyone, with a focus on connecting people to each other and with their local landscape.

Daniel Flinchbaugh
Catonsville, Maryland | ![]() | View | |||
